This month, during its soft-opening, we visited the long-awaited second branch of ZOLA Lava Rock Oven Pizza. Located just barely on the Hangzhou side of the river at the Wantai Mall, tell the cabbie to drop you off at the junction of East Wangjiang and Qianjiang Roads. The new location has stepped up its game in a big way, offering a larger variety of dishes and drinks, while leaving their beloved lava rock oven pizzas unchanged.
The first thing we noticed perusing the new menu was a focus on Southeast Asian dishes. The next thing we noticed was how much of it sounded amazing. Hainan Chicken (38RMB), Singapore Curry Chicken (58RMB), and Roasted Lamb Chops (88RMB) all would have to wait until next time. We did however try their Shrimp in Red Curry (48RMB), and it was an instant hit. The Zola Signature Chili Crab (148RMB) brought us back to our favorite Singaporean restaurant, and we soaked up the delicious sauce with rice. The Thai Style Chicken (48RMB) was perfectly sweet and spicy, and the chicken was tender. We tried and enjoyed the Baked Bacon and Bolognese Potato Pie (38RMB), but let’s be honest: we were all excited for the pizza. Between the Margaret Pizza (48RMB) topped with mascarpone and basil, and the Ham and Mushroom Pizza (68RMB), it was hard to pick a favorite.
To quench our thirst, we polished off a few glasses of their special mixed Lime Juice, which is a refreshing blend of pineapple and lime. It was so good we were digging around for the fruit at the bottom of the glass. They have many fresh juice offerings starting at 32RMB. Zola also boasts a full cocktail menu, an array of beer, and an ample wine list. Parking, Wi-Fi, English menus are all available.
