Ninethirty by Awfully Chocolate, is a restaurant/dessert bar originating from Singapore. Awfully Chocolate began as a dessert shop in 1998 selling only one product – a simple, moist dark chocolate cake with layers of dark chocolate fudge. After perfecting their chocolate cake, other sweets followed, such as chocolate banana cake, chocolate truffles and their premium dark chocolate ice cream called Hei.

Ninethirty later joined the restaurant scene as Awfully Chocolate’s idea for Asian-inspired Western comfort food. With one other branch in Shanghai, the newly opened Ninethirty at Westlake Intime is the third in the world.

The hip and trendy restaurant was packed at lunch and had a buzz of excitement. Desserts were flying off the shelves like shoes at a Christian Louboutin sample sale, being snapped up by eager young ladies elbowing each other to get to the front counter. Many of the desserts we wanted to try were already sold out at lunch; we were told by the staff that we need to start lining up early in the morning to get the most popular items. Wow, who knew Hangzhou had such a sweet tooth! We went with Salted Butterscotch Brownie (27RMB), Flourless Chocolate Cake (30RMB) and White Chocolate Crème Brûlée (37RMB). They certainly satisfied our chocolate cravings.

Drinks are equally chocolate focused with hot and cold chocolate drinks, chocolate coffees and chocolate martinis (35-75RMB). Teas and normal coffees are also available (16-32RMB).

The food was well-received and quickly devoured. The Browned Butter Mushroom Fettuccini (65RMB) was fragrant, creamy and had fancy shimeiji mushrooms. The Great Burger (88RMB) was seriously juicy and came with bacon and red cheddar roux. Chargrilled Pork Chop (98RMB) was thick-cut and had a smoky flavour from the grill.Braised Beef Karubi (98RMB) was lip-smacking good witha chunk oftender beef, grilled vegetables and an au jus sauce that’s so irresistible you’ll want to sop up every last drop with the accompanying fries. The fries came with every entrée andthey were terrific – crispy golden on the outside, soft and fluffy inside.

Parking is available at Westlake Intime but requiresvery long waiting times to get into the parking lot, even on a weekday lunch. It’s best to come here by taxi or even public transit.
