Fancy something a little bit different? Then get your dancing clogs on and head down to Asia Table in the MIXC Mall. This new restaurant offers great Thai food in a fun and funky way. Perfect for that special birthday meal with the family, the staff will get you singing along and rocking & reeling around the restaurant in no time.
The Guangzhou Banana Leaf catering Group established in 1995 are renowned for their restaurants in both Shanghai and Guangzhou, and since opening Asia Table in Hangzhou, the restaurant has constantly been packed to the rafters for this unique experience.
The serving staff and band are largely led by senior Filipino staff for the obvious reason that Filipinos absolutely love to perform anywhere (it must be in their blood), and when they start, it becomes infectious. A staff led Conga line around the restaurant practically ensures your participation, and why not? You’ve got to let your hair down sometime right? The talented band will sing you a hipped-up “Happy Birthday” with gusto, and will even take your song requests; though strangely they couldn’t play “Far, Far Away” when I was asked want I wanted.
The interior of the restaurant is modern and very, very funky with hanging fabrics, reflective surfaces, and bird-cage booths mirroring the traditional Chinese ones hanging above the entrance area. Surprisingly, the design of each individual dining area offers some intimacy yet still manages to keep you part of the proceedings.
The service was prompt and our order was taken immediately. It seemed as though no time had passed when the shared, starter platter, we had ordered, arrived. Essentially Thai street food, this platter comprised of Chicken in Pandanus leaves, BBQ Chicken skewers, Thai Prawn cakes, and vegetable spring rolls was delightful, as was the barbecued half of chicken with Thai spices we also ordered, but the mightiest dish was yet to come and when it did it was a knock-out. The King Prawn yellow curry served with oven-fresh, crusty bread was a revelation. No really, it was.
Not being overly pricey, this place gets busy in the evenings so you are advised to get there early. Don’t miss this one.
