This little jewel is located just east of Jiaogong Rd. on Wenyi, and although the name may seem odd, it’s quite apt. Upon entering this little eatery that seats about 10, our attention was immediately drawn to the fun and quirky décor. The walls are lined with license plates from all over Canada and the U.S., and pictures of a guy, who we assumed to be the proprietor. Upon closer inspection, we realized the pictures told us the story of how this place came to be.

According to the pictures, the person we assumed is the owner spent a lot of time in Vancouver, carving totem poles, which are symbolic monuments of the Indigenous Peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast; a people who have a chief. Upon meeting the owner, Eric, and speaking to him for a bit about his life and restaurant, we found out we were on the right track. Eric spent 7 years in Vancouver, splitting his time between carving really impressive totem poles, and acquiring a taste for Canadian-style hockey food. After arriving back in China, he settled down in Hangzhou, and in December of 2010, he opened the December Chief. And there you have it. Now onto the food!

Both the boss and the menu are bilingual, so you’ll have no problem ordering up all the good stuff he’s got on offer. Granted, what you’ll find isn’t fancy, but it’s definitely something you’ll enjoy if Canadian-style French fries w/ gravy (8RMB), popcorn chicken (8RMB) and wings (7RMB), all deep-fried to perfection, are your type of thing. The portions aren’t huge, but neither are the prices, and that’s good because it means you’ll have room leftover for one of his spicy chicken sandwiches (11RMB), or their recommended DC Special Burger (22RMB), which is a bacon cheeseburger sitting on a bed of sautéed mushrooms and onions, and topped with lettuce, tomato, pickle, mayo, and, we believe, 1,000 Island. There are also some vegetarian options, including the crispy tofu burger, if meat’s not your thing.

We scarfed our lunch down as fast as it was served, and washed it down with a couple glasses of OJ (7RMB), but they also offer beer, soda, milk, tea and coffee. Free wi-fi is available onsite. Parking is not. Best to bike or walk.

This place is great (Bostonmama)  2011-07-23 18:00:08
Tried this place out today and I must say, it was really great. Now, I'm a vegetarian. I know, you're thinking, "How are you going to rate a burger place when you didn't eat the burgers?" Well, I've talked to plenty of meat eaters who love the place and can vouch. So I'm here to vouch for the fact that this place is a great spot for a vegetarian. I tried to fried tofu sandwich and the man had the soy beef "burger" Baby man had an egg and cheese sandwich with extra ketchup. We shared fries and some great convo in english with the owner, who is a really nice guy. Great prices (we got out for under 100 kuai with oj's, three sandwiches and a large basket of fries), good company, and cozy atmosphere. We told him to deliver. you should too. He's thinking about it. If enough people encourage him, maybe he'll do it. A++

Hubby wanted burger, little lady wanted fries, trekked to the address, no more December Chief. Nice man told us the owner had a baby.
