For all of you cultural carnivores out there, we have a place for you. It is called the Gulistan Xinjiang Uyghur Restaurant. This Uyghur restaurant has good food, but the real draw is the entertainment. Without a doubt this will be a place that you’ll remember. Does a dancing wait staff do anything for you? When we went for dinner, the entire place erupted in such a festive atmosphere, with live music pulling everyone up from their tables. And this is far from the usual music and dancing. It has a very Middle Eastern beat to it. Also, something that may come as a shock is that the guys are supposed to dance with the guys and the girls dance with girls. Kinda defeats the purpose of dancing, but is still is an experience that will stay in that brain of yours for a long while.

A little info for you newbies: A Uyghur is a person from Western China (but don’t say that to them). Their food is usually pretty spicy, and they cook up lots of meat dishes. The food here isn’t bad (there’s often a tradeoff when entertainment is involved). Any dish that has lamb in it will rock your socks off, and what’s nice is that the portions aren’t huge, so you can order up a variety. Our Uyghur friends did a great job of choosing for us – we got some spicy, some with brown sauce and some with tomato sauce (both great for nan dippin’), some that was stuffed in nan, and of course the obligatory kebabs (which incidentally is what the Uyghurs call them). A couple more suggestions for you are the Polo (rice pilaf) and the Big Dish Chicken (or da pan ji).

If you are a lover of Xinjiang grub and wondering why you have not seen this place before, let us enlighten you. Formally, it was located in the NW part of the city, near Zijigang Xiao Chu. Now it is close to Wulin Sqare and right beside the Nada Hotel. We hear a really good time of year to go is around the Uyghur New Year (March 21st). Our advice is to take a big group to ensure that the staff throws on their traditional garb and dances it up for you – guaranteed that the house will be shaking for that occasion. Picture menu available.
