Even if you really know Beishan road, Da Chik Mun is easy to miss. It’s sits a little off the road, but this recess does make it seem a little more welcoming (and assures parking) than those that are smack dab on the street. Despite its slightly obscured locale, though, Da Zhai Men (as it’s known to locals) has quite the rep in town.

The atmosphere is where it’s at for this place. It’s small: there is room for maybe fifty people downstairs. When we went, it was crowded, but the tables were spaced out enough so that it wasn’t too noisy. There are quite a few special things about the interior of Da Chick Mun. The dining area is a courtyard with windows upstairs opening out onto it. The monolithic mosaic at the far end pictures an old city street with a skyscraper looming in the background. What we really got into was the lighting. Unlike a lot of other pricey places, this one is all about the having some. They’ve got strings of lights all throughout the place, but the most interesting use of lights is the bare bulbs hanging from the ceiling.

Unfortunately, it seems that they’ve spent most of their energy thinking about the interior and not enough on the food. That’s not to say it’s inedible. Some of the dishes were quite good. We particularly liked complementary peanuts (which had some sort of fiddle faddle thing going on) that they gave us while we perused the menu. From the name, you would think the dishes would be Cantonese, but in fact the menu is all over the place. They’ve got sushi and other Japanese dishes, abalone and the other obnoxiously expensive “life expanding” dishes, along with some fused dishes. Not to be completely down on the food here, we did get some pretty good cold dishes, and the Cod, Shrimp and Squid in Wine Sauce was right on. Though the victuals are hit or miss, we still like Da Chik Mun if just for the atmosphere. Look to spend 300RMB for two; tack on a couple of hundred if you want vino with that. English and picture menu available.
