If you’re looking for a place to spend the day pampering yourself, look no further than West Wen’er Road, where the ratio of day spas to any other business is a lopsided 6 to 1. We decided to check out SPARING, which we think is to be pronounced as two words; the newest addition to this area’s overabundance of options. Located just west of Gudun Road, SPARING is easy to find as it’s the spa with the black façade sandwiched between 2 other spas with lighter, earth-toned, façades.
Upon entering we were greeted by their courteous staff; escorted into their cozy, soft-lit, reception area, replete with Zen pond, and given an aromatic tea to sip while we looked through their menu of aromatherapy treatments and traditional massages. We opted for the 2-hour, Balinese massage, if for no other reason than we’d never had a one before. Plus, at only 498RMB for the whole experience, it seemed like a very reasonable price to pay for an afternoon of relaxing self-indulgence.
After changing into a nice silk robe and fresh pair of sterile, one-time-use, undershorts, we were led to our private room, where we were greeted by our massage therapist, who served us tea while she soaked our feet in rose petal-infused water. For the next 15 minutes, we just sat there, listening to the faint whisper of new age music and tropical bird calls, while our therapist massaged our feet and calves. That alone was worth the cost of admission, and was merely the warm up. After getting the stress sapped out our soles by a masseuse with hands like a bodybuilding cherub’s, she directed us over to the massage table where the real magic would begin.
If you, like us, have never had a Balinese massage, man oh man, do you have to get one. It starts with some brief aromatherapy then moves into a deep-penetrating, knot-obliterating, tension relieving oil massage the likes of which we’ve never experienced. Without saying a word, our massage therapist was able to pinpoint our tension spots, with greater accuracy than our last acupuncturist, and knead the offending areas into blissful submission. By the time it was over, we were swimming in a sea of sleepy euphoria we wished would last forever, and for several hours later, it did, thanks to the lingering aroma of the oils.
So, if you are looking a high-end, full-service spa, with a nice environment, fantastic staff, and prices that will not break the bank, give SPARING a try. You’ll be glad you did.
