It’ll start to get cold before anyone can put away the shorts and take out the sweaters. Now that we’ve got a bit of time left to enjoy the outdoors, a rustic place or two is more than welcome. We can’t confirm who owns the Half Bottle, but by the looks of the interior, someone connected with the place must have a line into the China Academy of Art. Nice pottery sits atop the tables, and unique oil paintings hang from the walls. It opened a couple of years ago, so things aren’t as new as an iPhone 3G. The food, however, was a sure winner, as were the prices (239RMB for four at lunch). They even have a small parking lot. We missed it on our first trip, but didn’t get a ticket parking on the road, so private drivers need not worry about where they leave the Volkswagen.

If a taxi is taken, eyes should be peeled to the right after turning west off of Yuhuangshan Road near the Silk Museum (see museum location on the map in the middle of the magazine). It’s easy to pass the Half Bottle on the first trip. This tends to happens when a restaurant is hidden behind trees. But isn’t that why so many people enjoy it? It’s not pruned like a golf course, but offers a natural seclusion only unkempt, swaying trees can provide. Amongst the array of dishes we ordered, we kept diving into the Bull Frog in Pickled Pepper Soup. For those that like a little spice with their amphibian, it hits the spot. Don’t mind a few bones and strong breath? Go for the Gold Medal Garlic Ribs. When there are more than four people at the table, the Old Village Chicken isn’t usually skipped. The waitress told us it’s a big favorite with everyone.
