Though it is a bit far away from the city center, FE Restaurant & Lounge on Shaoxing Road offers more than the average place. First of all, the chef here used to work at the Hyatt, hence the presentation and taste of the food is definitely up to standards.
As was explained by the writing on the wall, “FE” stands for “Fancy” and “Elegant” which is the atmosphere the owners wish to create with antique style leather armchairs, brass lamps and lush green ferns hanging from the high ceiling. “FE” is also the chemical symbol for iron, which is used liberally here to create the ubiquitous industrial look.
We had a pleasant lunch starting with spicy and meaty Demon Chicken Wings (恶魔鸡翅, 32RMB) that were Frenched, opening the wing and exposing the bone to make a nice handle. Seafood Spring Rolls (海鲜春卷, 38RMB) were stuffed with shrimp and elegantly shaped like long slender branches. Signature Sausage Pizza (窑烤招牌烤肠披萨, 78RMB) had an assortment of flavourful sausages, peppers, including jalapeno, and loads of stringy cheese that had more taste than the typical pizza mozzarella – perhaps it was a blend of Gruyere and/or Emmental. Deep Fried Radish Cake (回忆之油墩儿, 12RMB) was nothing out of the ordinary, but it’s kind of cool to be able to eat this street food in a restaurant lounge. It’d be good as a bar snack.
Speaking of the bar, it is well stocked with a large variety of premium liqueurs and the cocktails (48-68RMB) are priced lower than the typical Hangzhou city price. There are often fun promotions, such as for February if you drink 3 Deep Sea Bombs and can still walk in a straight line after an hour, then you will get 50% off your entire bill. Happy hour, from 6-9:30pm, has buy 2 get 1 free beers and buy 1 get 1 free cocktails.
FE also runs Hangzhou’s best escape room adventure. There are six different adventures to choose from, costing between 120-150RMB per person. Escape room adventures are real-life games where teams have to work together to solve puzzles to escape the room. Chinese only menu and some parking is available on the street.
