No. 3 Yanxia Cave |
|
Imagine being a sniper who's about to take a clean head shot from 800 meters away, while ants crawl all over your body as you lay prone on the ground, and the stench of sweat and mosquito repellant stings your nostrils while you're sighting your target through the optics of a 24x scope. Now imagine that the guy you're about to drop is the annoying geek who works in the cubicle next to you at the office, and how good it will feel to pull the trigger. That's what No. 3 Yanxia Cave offers, as a full-service retreat for companies and gamer groups who want to play some war games on the tree-lined hills of Hangzhou. Along with laser-activated gear to confirm “kills,” there are camouflage suits available, four kinds of high-quality replica guns to tote, and full support from knowledgeable staff that will turn you into a lean, mean, faux-killing machine. If this isn't quite your thing, there is a restaurant on site that amazed us...

Dashidai |

Shopping malls have hit Hangzhou with full force, and it’s only going to get worse, or better, depending on your stance on malls. With all of the modern convenience of a monstrous consumer area, underground parking, an enormous ice skating rink, and a dizzying number of branded retail outlets; the Dashidai is about as good as it gets these days. There's all kinds of food to be had as well, and the best news is that the long-awaited food court is finally ready for action now, giving shoppers a chance to cool their heels while munching on a variety of foods in the cool, clean comfort of the mall's cavernous space. We found booths with everything from wild to mild, and a centrally-located beverage island that has an incredible selection of fruit juices, chilled desserts, shaved ices, and fresh fruit platters. A truly beautiful sight to behold was the beer, however. Remember John Travolta telling Samuel L. Jackson (in Pulp Fiction) about getting a glass of beer at a McDonald's in Paris?...

Splash Poolside Café |
Not so long ago, we reviewed a place way out on the west side that had some of the best curry in Hangzhou. Its name was Garage Cafe, and it was quickly becoming something of a cult hit with everyone who enjoyed the laid-back funky atmosphere, and the company of the cafe's slightly eccentric and highly affable owner, Andy. Unfortunately, the Garage is no more, because, apparently, we don’t deserve anything good. However, for those of you in Binjiang (who couldn't make the trip all the way out to the wild west) it’s been reincarnated into something that must be seen to be believed. Nestled in an area occupied by the Four Points Hotel, and what seems to be Hangzhou’s only McDonald's...

The Serendipity Inn |
|
Whiling away in this heat, it’s oppressive to say the least. Fit for neither man nor beast, and as someone who’s been accused of being a less than flattering example of both, I feel that makes me more than qualified to speak on behalf of both parties in regards to this wretched weather. How fatigued I feel at the very thought of so much as even the slightest flight of fancy, when even the most trifling of pursuits puts me at risk of perspiring through the thinnest of my fine linen suits. No, I’m afraid high society offers me no respite from the relentless swelter of summer, so when one of my associates down at the International Trade Mart, which I founded, clued me in to a new resort nestled in the verdant hills of Horse Mountai n (马山) called the Serendipity Inn (风和日丽1号), I took it as a sign.
I immediately called upon my man servant, Smedley, to pack our bags and ready the car. His real name is Frankie Jenkins, but I couldn’t think of anything more uncouth than turning towards the kitchen during a formal dinner, and yelling, “Oh, Frankie!”...

On this Harvest Moon: The Mid-Autumn Festival
by Clay Shaw |
Being a foreigner in China is all about getting noticed, right? If you aren't busy dodging the stares of elderly citizens playing cards on the sidewalks, then you're at least remotely conscious of nervous whispering and finger-pointing behind your back, as children hide behind their mothers, and men cast furtive glances at the freaky...
